Trying something different...

I've been playing around with coloring in photoshop. I don't really know what I'm doing and I've been staring at this image too long to tell what to do next, so any input would be appreciated.
As for the text, I have a habit of making up stupid songs to sing to myself and here is one of them! I imagine this chipper little number 20's style with wah-wah trumpets and ukulele.

This is great Michelle- the colors are really nice and your lyrics are charming :). Maybe a bit of a textural undertone to the composition would give it some more of the richness that wood grain does. Maybe fabric or crumpled paper? Just some thoughts.

Thanks Marie! I'm glad you think the colors are okay, it had gotten to that point where I couldn't tell anymore. I was thinking about texture, I don't know how to do that so that it looks good though, I need to figure that out soon.

Hmm... I'm no expert but I can give a suggestion on how to go about texture. Usually I'll create several layers in either illustrator or photoshop- the first layer would be a photograph of texture and the second would be your piece. You can increase the opacity of your piece to have the texture show through slightly, or vice versa. I hope this helps!

Michelle,

Try not only varying the opacity, but also using different modes, like Multiply, on the textured layer. I usually desaturate my texture layer too. You can also lock the color layer and then spray a slightly darker color randomly around the edges, to get some variation in tone.
